detailed bio
Michael DesBarres is an architect (registered in the State of Wisconsin & California), planner, project manager and educator. He has apprenticed with Bruce Severson (Architectural Arts, Ltd), Floyd Hamblen (Montooth + Hamblen Architecture), and Victor Sidy (Victor Sidy, Inc.) and has worked collaboratively with many others.

Michael founded MdB Design, LLC in 2008 and has served in roles from lead designer to project manager for projects in Wisconsin, California, Arizona, Colorado, and Ohio. He designed and oversaw the construction of his first residence while in graduate school and has gone on to design private residences, office and industrial spaces, assembly spaces, and planning projects. Michael is interested in the relationship between professional practice and architectural education and previously served as a core faculty member and Director of Academic Affairs at Taliesin, the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture from 2011-2016.

Michael’s professional practice produces high-quality work that develops from close relationships. He views architecture and design as a collaborative process, one which is in service to his clients, the community and the world at large. He has participated in many community-oriented design exercises including National AIA Regional Urban Design Assistance Teams (RU/DAT) and local initiatives such as the Arizona Capitol Mall Charette (2007). In addition to practicing architecture, he is a master presenter, graphic designer, scale model builder, and enjoys working with multidisciplinary teams to accomplish complex goals. His work has been published in the Wisconsin State Journal, the Scottsdale Tribune, the Frank Lloyd Wright Quarterly and the Taliesin Fellows Journal and has been exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, Florida Southern University in Lakeland, Florida and the Price Tower Arts Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

Michael earned his B.A. in Geography from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2005) and his Master of Architecture degree from the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture (2008), graduating with the distinction of Cum Laude.
